What Would You Do With $25,000?
Casey Neistat is a 32-year-old filmmaker and viral mastermind who was recently given $25,000 by 20th Century Fox to make a promotional video for Fox’s upcoming movie, “The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty,” which stars Ben Stiller. So Neistat proposed to Fox that he take the $25,000 to the Philippines, where Typhoon Haiyan struck in early November, killing at least 6,000 people and causing untold damage. The company agreed. Three days later, Neistat was there.
“Fox wanted me to make a movie about chasing a dream,” Neistat said on YouTube. “I am a big dreamer but at that time only one thing came to mind; if I could do anything in the world right now what would it be? That’s to help the victims of the typhoon.” So Neistat proposed to Fox that he take the $25,000 to the Philippines. The company agreed. Three days later, Neistat was there. With the help of his best friend (Neistat did not bring a film crew), he launched his own typhoon relief effort, bringing food and other relief supplies to the citizens of Tacloban, a major Philippine city that was virtually leveled by a storm.
Tesla Motors Just Might Reinvent The American Auto Industry
Tesla has been setting the stage for the sustainable transportation revolution. It’s only natural that they would want to create the world’s most advanced automotive production factory to math their ambition. Robotics have been a large part of car manufacturing, but this facility is truly a work of art. It has been renovated since being purchased in 2010 to include a grid of skylights, a pristine white paintjob, and bike paths for employees to navigate the enormous indoor space. Welcome to a company of the future.

Camp Green: Creating Common Ground
Fifty feet by 32 feet: as far as farms go, that’s probably one of the smallest in the world. But that hasn’t stopped Harriet Nakabaale from turning her hard-packed chunk of Kampala into something of a miracle. In a city where overcrowding chokes many neighborhoods and nothing, it seems, can grow in them, Nakabaale’s Camp Green is like a beacon. “Anywhere weeds can thrive, crops can grow there too,” tells Harriet. Harriet’s garden bursts with living things, all of them edible–an important survival tactic in an urban area where the high cost of buying food can saddle a family with relentless poverty.

Local News Update: A Christmas Present, Or Two, Or Ten
While this is just a small example of conformity in media, it prompts the question: how much of our news is scripted and processed on a corporate level? A piece of shared media content within a larger company is one thing. Creating a news campaign for mass distribution on a national level is another. It is well known how little diversity there is the mainstream media. With only a handful of large corporations running nearly all broadcast outlets, it isn’t surprising that redundancy happens. The reminder is to pay attention to where you get your news. Independent media is on the rise, and we’re doing our part at Elevate to spread the stories worth sharing.
