03 Feb / The tipping point for a world without poverty will occur in the next 15 years…
Forty years ago, Bill Gates and his childhood friend Paul Allen bet that software and personal computers would change the way people around the world worked and played. This bet wasn’t exactly a wager. It was an opportunity to make computers personal and empower people through the magic of software. Some people thought they were nuts. But the bet turned out well. Fifteen years ago, Bill and Melinda Gates made a similar bet.
They started their foundation in 2000 with the idea that by backing innovative work in health and education, they could help dramatically reduce inequity. In his annual letter, Bill outlined the key issues in today’s world, and positive outlook for their resolution. Bill and Melinda believe that life will improve for people in poor countries faster in the next 15 years than it ever has before. They discuss the breakthroughs in health, farming, banking, and education that will make that progress possible.
The power of media to spread inspiring messages far and wide is catching on. The Gates Notes is a website that offers an incredible archive of videos on these key issues. It may not seem like much to share a 2 minute video on the global health of women, but in fact, it’s a vote of confidence for the change that is already happening. “We believe that in the coming years, people will expand their circle of compassion – from their family, and clan, to their country, region, and the world. Giving will go further, because fewer people will be desperately poor, and more people will be in a position to help others.” – Bill and Melinda Gates
